About Angul

About Angul

Angul; also known as Anugul) is a town and a municipality and the headquarters of Angul district in the state of Odisha, India. The District of Angul situated at the heart of Odisha was a part of Undivided Dhenkanal District till early March 1993. Angul District came into existence as a separate District on April 1, 1993. Angul is a major industrial town along with Rourkela in Western Odisha. Angul serves as an important junction or gateway to Central & Western Odisha. Before the industrial revolution that changed the landscape of Angul, historically Angul was a land of different tribes who commanded over small citadels. According to popular folklore, the name Angul is said to be derived from a local chieftain named “Anu” who started a futile rebellion against the King. The local’s referred to that period as Anugol (Anu’s war), subsequently, the name "Anugol" stuck and the town came to be known as "Angul" as we know it now.
