  • Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu - Marking the agricultural New Year at the advent of the seeding time Rongali Bihu is observed around April 15 on the first day of Hindu solar calendar.
  • Kati Bihu or Kongali Bihu -  Marking the completion of sowing and transplanting of paddies Kati Bihu is celebrated on the first day of 'Kati' month in Assamese calendar. Occurring in the mid of October of Gregorian calendar this Bihu comes in a different flavor.
  • Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu - Marking the end of the harvesting period this Bihu is celebrated in the mid of January, on the first day of 'Magh' month of Assamese Calendar.

History and Origin

Transcending all the religious and class barricades, Bihu is celebrated with much jubilation and festivity. The significant and noteworthy celebration of Bihu dates back to 3500 B.C which is historically presumed of having its origin in the pre-Aryan days. Bihu celebrations used to last for a month or more during the primitive period which have now reduced to a week. Two different perspectives are there regarding the source of origin of the word Bihu’s.

  • One says that the word Bihu is originated from the language of Dimasa Kacharis and Bodo word ‘bohun’, meaning ‘earth’.
  • And the other says that the word Bihu is originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Vishu’ meaning the vernal equinox of the winter solstice.

The most eminent and well celebrated Bihu is the Rongali Bihu which is commemorated to welcome the Assamese New Year. This year the Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu will be observed on the 15th of April. The festivities of this fun filled festival prolongs for about a week spreading joy and happiness. The Assamese people stays geared up to celebrate this spring festival of Bihu with huge pomp and show. Rongali Bihu is the most eminent and acclaimed Bihu festival of Assam observed with much joy and festivity. ‘Gamosa’ ( a traditional Assamese hand-woven cotton towel with red designs and a white background) plays a pivotal role in this joyous festival.
