History of Grandparents’ Day
Grandparents’ Day was initially celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Marian McQuade started a campaign in the early 1970s. Her idea of the holiday wanted to be an incentive for families to visit the elderly members who were living in nursing homes. Her idea began flourishing more with time and more people began to emphasize her wisdom and compassion. With time McQuade worked tirelessly on the effort and eventually she was appointed to the West Virginia Committee on Aging the Nursing Home Licensing Board and ultimately to the White House Conference where she made a greater impact. Her hard work in connecting the generations eventually bore fruits and Grandparents’ Day came into existence as a National Holiday. The month of September is chosen for Grandparents’ Day as a symbol of & Autumn Years of Life and has been observed worldwide ever since.
