God of War: Ascension is an action-adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. Although this game is the seventh instalment in the God of War series, the storyline serves as the prequel to the entire series. The plot of the game is founded on the Greek mythology and the game is set in Ancient Greece.
Synopsis and Features
Vengeance is the central theme in this prequel to the globally-acclaimed God of War series. It has been six months since Kratos stood over the bodies of his slain wife and child, his hands stained with their blood - tricked by Ares into murdering the only people he ever loved. Swearing to seek revenge, Kratos broke the blood oath that bound him to Ares, but oaths to Olympus are not so easily broken. Kratos is damned to rot in solitary confinement in a prison and battles insanity at the hands of the Furies. He will be tested as he seeks freedom, redemption for his sins, and the clarity to avenge his family.
The gameplay of God of War: Ascension is similar to that of the earlier versions. It is a third-person single-player video game viewed from a fixed camera perspective. Kratos is guided through various environments while fighting enemies, who are mostly characters from the Greek mythology. The game elements require the player to climb walls, jump across chasms, and slide down walls to proceed through sections of the game.
Kratos' main weapon is the Blades of Chaos - a pair of blades attached to chains that are wrapped around Kratos' wrists. The blades can be swung around to attack enemies. As in previous games, a Rage mode is included, which provides increased attack damage and different attack combinations.
As in the previous games, players will find chests coloured green, blue, or red, with each chest containing orbs or the corresponding colour. Green orbs replenish the player's health, blue orbs replenish magic allowing further usage, and red orbs provide experience for upgrading weapons and magic—making new, more-powerful attacks available. Red orbs are also collected by destroying certain inanimate objects.
